Apple’s Fusion Drive merges a standard HDD with an SSD, creating one cohesive volume – their answer to hybrid storage. The aim is to provide the fast performance of SSDs for commonly accessed files without compromising the ample storage space of an HDD.
The SSD section typically consists of rapid flash storage with a smaller capacity, such as 128GB or 256GB.
The HDD component features a slower rotation, but boasts a significantly larger storage capacity of up to 1TB or 2TB.
Apple promotes it as a cost-effective solution that strikes a perfect balance between speed and storage capacity, without the hefty price tag of a large SSD.
The process is as follows.
By utilizing macOS Core Storage, the Fusion Drive seamlessly combines the two drives into a unified volume visible in Finder. However, the underlying process remains unchanged:Commonly accessed files, such as the operating system, applications, and recently opened documents, are automatically saved on the SSD for faster performance.
Infrequently accessed files, such as movies, photos, or archives, are transferred to the HDD.
The system automatically transfers data between the two drives depending on how it is being used.
Opening a frequently used app will result in a quick launch from the SSD, whereas less frequently accessed files will remain on the HDD.
Some potential drawbacks or restrictions to be aware of include:
– compiled code may not be compatible with all devices or operating systems
– limited documentation or support may be available for certain features
– certain advanced functionalities may require additional manual configuration or integration efforts.
Not as fast as a full SSD: The HDD section is still constrained by the speed of its spinning disks.
One potential drawback of the Fusion Drive is its reliability. This is due to the fact that it consists of two separate drives, each of which could potentially fail on its own. In such a scenario, the entire Fusion Drive could become inoperable.
Having limited control over data placement means that you are unable to manually determine which data remains on your solid state drive and which data is stored on your hard disk drive.
The upgrade process can be challenging for those looking to improve their iMacs, especially in comparison to using individual drives. This is particularly true for older models, as the SSDs are soldered in place.
For general-purpose users, there is a noticeable improvement in boot and app loading speed when compared to using pure HDDs.
Moreover, professional assets and files may experience inefficient caching when split between HDD and SSD components. As a result, workflow is hindered and any potential speed advantages are negated. For instance, running a pro tools session demonstrates this issue. The fusion drive cannot predict which samples will be needed at different points, particularly in larger sessions with high RAM usage, resulting in sporadic playback.
Fusion drives only work in tandem so that if the SSD cache component fails then the file system is lost. It’s recommended that fusion drives are replaced and up until that time machine backups are performed.
